Up to two thirds of patients in long term care facilities and one-half of the elderly residing in the community are estimated to have some type of sleep disturbance. The consequences of chronic insomnia include sedative hypnotic agent dependence, inappropriate medications prescribed by providers, self-medication with alcohol, depression, diminished quality of life, and in the community residing elderly with dementia placement in the long-term care setting. These programs will help improve function in the elderly with sleep problems by directly guiding you in assessment and appropriate management.

Assessment
