Older adults often encounter unique barriers when dealing with health care providers that make them hesitant to ask questions, request that information be repeated or get second opinions. These lapses in communication often result in confusion that can hinder their health progress.

Partners In Health is designed to help older adults become active partners in their own health care. By pinpointing their role as a primary source of information, the video empowers older adults with the skills needed to communicate effectively and confidently with their health care providers, ensuring better care for themselves. Divided into two parts, the video uses brief vignettes that offer practical suggestions for working with doctors and pharmacists and handling situations older adults may perceive as embarrassing.

Part One will encourage older adults to:

• come to doctor visits prepared to participate in health care decisions
• keep notes on the success or failure of treatment options and share that information with the health care providers
• ask questions until they understand fully what is going on with their health

 

Part Two will encourage older adults to:

• ask questions about prescribed medications and their proper dosage
• take advantage of the information available at the pharmacy
• feel comfortable allowing the pharmacist to help them keep track of their medications to avoid possible drug interactions
