When Bad Things Happen (TNW02)
Video or DVD
When Bad Things Are Said: Racist Comments (Program 1)
In Program One, caregivers will be equipped with positive, hands-on interventions they can use to productively manage residents who use racially abusive language. The video also encourages a "plan-ahead" mentality that will enable caregivers to keep control of their emotions (and the situation) by choosing to not react to the words, by being aware of which residents are more prone to verbal abuse, and by avoiding or "working around" potential problem situations.

When Bad Things Are Said: Sexual Talk (Program 2)
In Program Two, caregivers will learn ways to offset sexual talk and behavior by redirecting the resident to an activity or getting help from a co-worker when dealing with residents who have a tendency to "get sexual". Strategies include further defusing the situation by using humor, and applying a gentle yet firm tone of voice to let the resident know that "it is not okay".

When Bad Things Are Said: Insults (Program 3)
In Program Three, caregivers will learn practical strategies to stay calm and not react abruptly when dealing with residents who "act out" through yelling or rude language. Intervention techniques include encouraging caregivers to "think differently" about the situation by readjusting what may be causing discomfort for the resident, or trying to understand what the resident is trying to express through his or her verbal actions.
